Hello again, dear LJ. My, it's been awhile, hasn't it? Time is the fire in which we all burn, and all that. To recap these last few months:|
1) Ever increasing workload at work. How many projects can a part time "temperaroy employee" take on at once? Twelve. I'm down to nine now, hence the time to post.
2) As of two weeks ago, I was sitting pretty in school. Now, Much Work Is To Be Done. Anyone ever implement computer v. computer scrabble in C using nothing but vi, gcc (& assoc. libraries, nitpickers), and /usr/share/dict/words ? Thought not.
3) Much concert goings on, and the beginnings of holiday travel season is upon us! Gah!
For those of you on the nerdish side, if you haven't heard a word about "sony rootkit" in your daily surfing, you need to go read sysinternals.com/blog/ and that dammed wired article by Schneier. There hasn't been this much of a shitstorm since... umm, I'll say this rates somewhere between the first usenet spam and the morris worm in terms of shitstormness. Expect much of the excrement to be directed at First4Internet in the uk. Lazy buggers :)
I swear, if someone pipes up with "you don't need vi, just edit inodes by hand, with magnets" I'll be forced to find a blunt object.
Concertwise, I'll have seen Everclear, Metallica, The Rolling Stones, and Rob Thomas within 7 days. Hearing be dammed!
A special complication was that the gates on the north end of the tunnel
were made by a different company than the gates on the south end of the
tunnel, this caused "additional problems". Which ones, are left to the
comp.risks readers as an exercise.
Are your classes like mine to where after thanksgiving, (or, landtaking as it's known here) you have a shit-ton of work to do in about a two week period before finals? Fortunately, mine mostly involve simply writing a ten page essay...I imagine comp sci requires dry wrote memorization.
I somehow also need to find the time and energy to install mandrake64 on my machine...you had any experience with that yet?
Yes. Yes, definitely. Fucking school. Not so much memorization as being able to use previously taught algorithms to solve problems... e.g. finite autoumna, graph processing, searching and sorting, all of that stuff.
oh, and no, never installed mandrake64, ever. My laptop runs suse 10 rather well at the moment.
Yeah, win2k simply isnt cuttng the mustard...not that it ever did. The idea of another complete install on this machine makes my toes curl...the first one was difficult enough. Probably gonna have to have some sort of dual boot,...because ati simply refuses to make all in wonder software for linux...unless someone out there has ported it...I need to be able to use the tv/radio fuctions of my overly expensive video card. I feel very much out of the fold with linux...the last install I did on a machine was that crappy old dual intel cpu 666 thing I had.
I'm officially jealous of you RIGHT NOW!! I WANT TO SEE METALLICA AND THE STONES AND ROB THOMAS!!!!
Okay- scary. I just reminded myself of that little, rich, British girl in Willy Wonka: "Datty, I wont anotha pony!" Ha ha ha...
The classic line from the classic movie: "I want an everlasting gobstopper NOW daddy!" :)
Oh, and I missed one concert artist - the opening act for Rob Thomas is Anna Nalick. MMM... Rob doesn't wear underwear, you know.

Someone else on LJ mentioned that a while back... can't remember who it was. Crazy the things that people know about you when you're in the spotlight, eh?
If you've ever been in the front rows of a rob thomas or matchbox twenty concert, it's fairly obvious :)

Lovely. Well, you enjoy the package viewing - oh yeah, and the music too. =D

The Rolling Stones are still alive?!?! Wow! They must be running out of money for their liver transplants, if they still need to tour. =P
As for #1
, we abuse our interns slightly less than in the public sector, evidently (I still
haven't made mine wash my car yet, even). Hell, I'm a full time employee, and I don't think I'm even working on 12 concurrent things at once.
Oh, and being some sort of Information Security Professional (or so they tell me I am, anyways), the rootkit thing was making some folks at work "crap themselves", so to speak. Amazing how stupid some companies can be, eh?
AND, just because I'm a bastard, and no one else has... "you don't need vi, just edit inodes by hand, with magnets"
. I've done this before... HIGHLY effective if you have good aim. ;-)
Boy, get me my clue by four. I need me a blunt object to beat some sense into you.

After reading this, I realized what he meant by editing by hand with magnets. When I first read his post, I was thinking about those kits you can buy with the magnets with words for poetry. I was thinking a set of those with a bunch of semi-colons and braces would be pretty slick.

Take a digital picture of the fridge with aforesaid code snippet, OCR it, save as .c file. Genius. New meaning to cut & paste.
