PSA - Train wreck in progress [Nov. 1st, 2006|10:31 pm]
I don't really think of myself as a political person. Sure, I have my beliefs, but I'm not about to go out try to convince others that mine are right and you should totally vote the way I tell you, and boy, by the way, have this tasty lollipop with it's green Franklin wrapper.

But sometimes, you just need to make people aware, and let them come to their own decisions.

This past week, it seems I've been bombarded, much like mallet strikes to an unprotected head, by various people saying that electronic voting machines are going to be the death of democracy.

For example, Jon "Hannibal" Strokes, writer for arstechnica since the beginning of time, has an extraordinarily long newspost about the "gathering storm" of e-voting problems. Likewise, Bruce Schneier blogs repeatedly about flaws in voting software.

So, go vote something wonky this November so you can claim you were disenfranchised. I could be a lot more crazy sounding, but I'll just say this computer science student rejects utterly the concept of computer aided voting being better than what we had in the 50's.

Oregon mails a scantron form to everyone - you fill it in, you send it back, and they scan it. No wonky Diebold machines to deal with. I kinda like it. =)

WTF mate? My "Bad Man" graffiti pic of Geo. W. Bush has mysteriously disappeared from my userpics list - it's still there, but the image itself is gone. Spooky.

I love Oregon...no sales tax, the reason you stated, they have service gas stations still...which actually freaks me out when they fill up my car...not sure what to do.. :)

Oh yeah. When I moved a couple months back, I remember my first big shopping trip - and the note on the receipt that said "No Sales Tax - 0.00".

The "can't pump your own gas" thing still bothers me, a bit, bit I'm driving so much less that I hardly even remember the last time I filled up - if I were going 2-3x a week like back in California, it'd bother me more.

Ah, yes. Hopefully your scantron system isn't like Diebold's AccuVote Optical Scan OV-OS, which will gladly accept post-it notes as valid ballots, and count them accordingly. You see, no serial numbers on the ballots to compare with the serial number series issued to that county, or to prevent running the same vote card through a billion times. you know, things like that.

Hopefully the county elections people aren't feeding post-its through it :)

I tried digging around on the Secretary of State's website for Oregon, and I was able to find their procedures doc... but nothing saying what the actual machines are that do the scanning...

IVS, methinks, this year. ... some sort of suit in progress with the winner of the contract refusing to abide by the contract terms.
